Traditions: The well was traditionally visited by pilgrims seeking healing. Local folklore recorded in the nineteenth century describes people leaving rags and other votive offerings on a thorn tree beside the spring. A later account preserves the belief that visiting the well three times could bring a cure. Today, rosary beads, ribbons, candles, flowers, and religious images continue to mark the site as a place of prayer and devotion.
Story:
At Ardrass in County Kildare, a natural spring dedicated to St. Patrick lies beneath the hill that bears his name. The well forms part of a wider sacred landscape that includes the remains of a medieval church and a nearby feature known as St. Patrick’s Bed, possibly associated with older pilgrimage practices.
The well appears in the Ordnance Survey Letters for Kildare from 1837–39, although the record offers little detail about its early history. By the 1870s, pilgrims were still leaving votive offerings on a thorn tree beside the water. Local tradition held that three visits could bring healing. The well remains a modest but evocative expression of Ireland’s enduring custom of seeking prayer, hope, and comfort at sacred springs.
