Story:
Clones is one of Ulster’s historic early Christian settlements, traditionally associated with St. Tigernach, who is said to have founded a monastery here in the sixth century. Its Irish name, Cluain Eois, preserves the memory of an ancient landscape shaped by faith, learning, and monastic life.
The monastery became an important religious centre in the region. Like many early Irish foundations, it would have served not only as a place of prayer but also as a community for study, craftsmanship, and the preservation of Christian learning. Its influence extended across the surrounding countryside, helping establish Christianity in this part of Ulster.
Clones is particularly notable for its surviving high cross and round tower. The cross, decorated with biblical scenes and intricate stone carving, reflects the artistic achievements of medieval Irish Christianity. The round tower, once a familiar feature of monastic settlements, served as a landmark and may also have offered refuge during periods of danger.
Although the original monastery has largely vanished, these surviving monuments preserve a tangible connection to Ireland’s early Christian heritage. Clones remains a place where the story of Ulster’s ancient monasteries can still be encountered in stone.
