Irish Saints

Name: Saint Kevin

Irish Name: Naomh Caoimhín

Meaning: Gentle, kind, and handsome

Story:

Saint Kevin is inseparably connected with Glendalough, the beautiful valley in County Wicklow that became one of Ireland's great centers of monastic life. Born in the sixth century, Kevin is remembered as a man who sought God through prayer, solitude, and a deep connection with the natural world.

According to tradition, Kevin studied under Saint Petroc and later traveled to Glendalough, where he found a remote place in which to live as a hermit. He settled beside the Upper Lake, seeking a life of simplicity and prayer away from the distractions of the world.

Other monks eventually gathered around him, and the small community grew into the monastery of Glendalough. Churches, workshops, homes, and places of prayer spread through the valley, creating a thriving Christian settlement. Yet Kevin himself continued to value solitude and would often retreat into the surrounding mountains and forests.

Many legends grew around his life. One tells of a blackbird laying its eggs in his outstretched hand while he remained motionless in prayer. Rather than disturb the bird, Kevin stayed until the eggs hatched. Whether understood literally or symbolically, the story captures the gentleness with which Irish tradition remembers him.

Kevin died around 618 and was buried at Glendalough. The monastery continued to flourish for centuries after his death, becoming an important center of learning and pilgrimage.

Today, Glendalough remains one of Ireland's most evocative sacred places. Its ruined churches and ancient round tower stand among lakes, mountains, and forests much as they have for generations.

Saint Kevin's story reminds us of the value of stillness. In a world that constantly asks us to hurry, his life points toward another way: to step away, become quiet, pay attention, and make room to encounter God.
